Keto diet has suddenly become very popular as pouplar celebs like Gwenyth Paltrow and Jenna Jameson are following it religiously.
Only if dreams were made of bacon and pepperoni-filled pizzas and losing weight was equally easy! It sure sounds like fun if we get to eat sizzling steaks or cheese-drenched eggs with a side of tender, but, crisp bacon to lose weight. Unfortunately losing weight is not that easy and the market has a plethora of diets that help you to shed that extra flab. And speaking about diets, Keto Diet is the latest fad which many celebs are dubbing as the magic elixir for losing weight. But have you ever thought that eating certain kinds of food in the wake of losing weight can affect your health in some other way?
Did you know that certain type of foods can actually make your body, especially if it makes your private parts stink? There is no denying that the keto diet is the new trend among people, especially for people who are looking to shed a few extra pounds easily. But lately, a number of women have come forward slamming the weight-loss solution for bringing along changes in their private parts, that has been debuted as 'keto crotch'.
The diet is a low-carb plan that emphasizes on eating fat and protein with few fruits and starchy vegetables. The diet trend has also become widely popular among celebs like Tim Tebow and Halle Berry and they swear by it saying that it’s a delicious way to drop pounds fast, but the critics don't think so.
They have also said that it might not be very sustainable for the average person. Even a few die-hard fans of the diet has said the worst side effect is what’s known as “Keto Breath,” which some describe as overripe-to-rotten fruity or metallic smell. Apart from that, there is also the matter of even more unfortunate odor, which online keto-lovers have dubbed “Keto Crotch.”
Even Women's Health claims that there has been an increase in women saying their vaginas have emitted a strong odor after altering their diet. Even though many women are coming forward to slam the keto diet, there is not enough research evidence confirming that 'keto crotch' is actually a thing.
According to experts, when our body goes through ketosis, i.e., when our body breaks down fat for fuel instead of carbs, it produces ketones and these are the chemicals that are naturally produced by your body. But, since our body produces more of them on the keto diet, the excess can make us poop, pee, and breath a little more smelly than usual.
OB/GYN Dr. Sherry A. Ross, who is a woman health's expert and author of 'She-ology', told Daily Mail, how food can alter the odors that emit from our vagina. She said, "The saying 'you are what you eat' holds true to odors coming from the vagina." She also said altering the number of fats and carbs in a woman's diet is not the only food change that could impact the vagina.
But the Keto diet can also alter vaginal pH levels and that could be one of the reasons for the change of odour in our vagina. Ross added, "Pungent foods and spices seem to take a fast lane in our bodies through the blood stream, lungs, sweat, and vaginal secretions creating especially intense smells under arms, on the scalp, in the genital area…just about everywhere. Foods that may give off a notably offensive odour include garlic, onions, mint, turmeric, curry, blue cheese, and other fermented foods, cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, and asparagus."
But, there are other foods that can make the odour emitting from our vaginas a little better. Ross said, "The good news is that there are foods that can combat offensive odours and actually add a sweet smell or taste to the vagina. These foods include fresh fruit, fruit juices, whole grains, and Greek yoghurt." The topic of Keto crotch first came to light when it was noticed on a Reddit thread.
In that thread, multiple women turned to the anonymous forum to state their concerns about how their body was changing because of the low-carb diet. One woman said, "I want to know if this is something I should be concerned about," she expressed her concern for her health while she was detailing her symptoms and her changed odour. It was observed in the thread that multiple women have experienced vaginal changes have also said that their bodies ' levelled out' after a few months of the keto diet.
Regarding this, Ross said, "If a food gives you foul-smelling urine, farts, or breath, chances are it will affect the taste and smell of your vagina. After a thorough examination of possible dietary changes, I would suggest seeing your healthcare provider to eliminate the possibility of vaginal infection."
Apart from the possibility of getting a Keto Crotch while on the diet, experts have also warned about how the high-fat food intake could be damaging to someone's health. Fitness expert, Jillian Michaels sparked a lot of critique from Al Roker and Andy Cohen after she said the keto diet was a "bad plan, for a million reasons."
She defended her statement saying that the low carb/high-fat diet ignored that "your cells, your macromolecules, are literally made up of protein, fat, carbohydrates, nucleic acids", according to a report published by AJC.
She added saying that it is common sense for everyone to avoid the keto diet. Apart from having 'keto crotch' and 'keto breath', there is also 'keto diarrhea', and yes, it is as bad as it sounds. Since the diet is high in fat, it can end up making your poop a little more liquidy than usual. Apart from that a lot of people on keto tend to use artificial sweeteners, which also can cause stomach issues.
